Rishi Sunak is the first Indian Origin prime minister in 210 years. He is the youngest Britain’s Prime Minister. Sunak has been a Conservative Party member for Richmond (Yorks) since 2015. After being elected uncontested as a new leader of the conservative party on Diwali a 42 year old became the Prime Minister on Diwali 25th Oct 2022.

Sunak was born in a family of immigrants. His grandparents immigrated from Punjab, in northeastern India, to East Africa, where his father Yashvir was born in Tanzania and mother Usha was born in Kenya, respectively. Parents of Indian Punjabi descent.  Sunak’s paternal grandpa was from Gujranwala (now Pakistan), while his maternal grandfather was from Ludhiana (now India); both places were in British India’s Punjab region at the time. In the 1960s, his grandparents moved to East Africa, then to the United Kingdom. They met and married when their families moved to Southampton, England, in the 1960s. Sunak’s father was a general practitioner for the National Health Service. His mother, a pharmacist, owned and operated a small pharmacy. Sunak is eldest among three children. Sanjay Williams (born 1982) is a psychologist, and Raakhi Williams (born 1985) is the chief of strategy and planning at the United Nations Global Fund for Education in Emergencies in New York.

Rishi Sunak went at Romsey’s Stroud School. This is one of the preparatory schools. Sunak was able to attend Winchester College, the prestigious private school that has produced no fewer than six chancellors of the Exchequer, thanks to his parents’ efforts and savings. Sunak is a student at LincoIn College, one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford, where he studies philosophy, politics, and economics. He was one of just nine undergraduates accepted to Lincoln College to study philosophy, politics, and economics, and there was no hiding place. Many future prime ministers attended the same college and received the same degree. He was president of the Oxford Trade & Investment Society, which provided students with information on financial markets and global commerce. While in Oxford, Sunak also interned at the Conservative Campaign Party headquarters.

1998 – 2001

Investment banker

Sunak joined Goldman Sachs as an analyst after graduating from college and remained with the investment bank until 2004.

He subsequently studied an MBA at Stanford University as a Fulbright scholar, where he met his future wife, Akshata Murthy, daughter of Narayana Murthy, an Indian millionaire and creator of technology giant Infosys. Stanford is One of the world’s leading research and teaching institutions.


Returning to United Kingdom

Sunak returned to the UK in 2006 and began working at The Children’s Investment Fund Management (TCI), a hedge fund founded by Sir Chris Hohn, who promoted him to partner two years later. Sunak left TCI in 2009 to join another hedge fund, Theleme Partners.

On July 5, 2022, he resigns as chancellor, and on July 9, he launches his candidacy to succeed Boris Johnson as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. However, on September 6, he is defeated by Liz Truss.
Truss’s attempt to impose an unfunded £45 billion ($50 billion) in tax cuts while capping energy prices for two years promised to open a gaping budget deficit and panicked financial markets. After the pound plummeted, mortgage rates climbed, and the cost of U.K. government borrowing rose, the Bank of England was forced to take emergency action to calm the markets. On October 20 Truss announced her resignation, putting into motion another leadership contest.
Truss resigns as British Prime Minister after only 45 days in office. On October 23, he launched his candidacy to succeed Liz Truss as Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Finally, on October 24, he is elected as Britain’s first prime minister of South Asian heritage after winning the last round of Tory votes.
