Rishi Sunak is the first Indian Origin prime minister in 210 years. He is the youngest Britain’s Prime Minister. Sunak has been a Conservative Party member for Richmond (Yorks) since 2015. After being elected uncontested as a new leader of the conservative party on Diwali a 42 year old became the Prime Minister on Diwali 25th Oct 2022.

Sunak was born in a family of immigrants. His grandparents immigrated from Punjab, in northeastern India, to East Africa, where his father Yashvir was born in Tanzania and mother Usha was born in Kenya, respectively. Parents of Indian Punjabi descent.  Sunak’s paternal grandpa was from Gujranwala (now Pakistan), while his maternal grandfather was from Ludhiana (now India); both places were in British India’s Punjab region at the time. In the 1960s, his grandparents moved to East Africa, then to the United Kingdom. They met and married when their families moved to Southampton, England, in the 1960s. Sunak’s father was a general practitioner for the National Health Service. His mother, a pharmacist, owned and operated a small pharmacy. Sunak is eldest among three children. Sanjay Williams (born 1982) is a psychologist, and Raakhi Williams (born 1985) is the chief of strategy and planning at the United Nations Global Fund for Education in Emergencies in New York.

Sunak was able to attend Winchester College, the prestigious private school that has produced no fewer than six chancellors of the Exchequer, thanks to his parents’ efforts and savings. On July 5, 2022, he resigns as chancellor, and on July 9, he launches his candidacy to succeed Boris Johnson as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. However, on September 6, he is defeated by Liz Truss.
Truss’s attempt to impose an unfunded £45 billion ($50 billion) in tax cuts while capping energy prices for two years promised to open a gaping budget deficit and panicked financial markets.
