Nikki Haley née Randhawa is an American politician who served as the 116th governor of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017. President Donald Trump chose her as the 29th United States Ambassador to the United Nations, and she served from January 2017 until December 2018.

Haley is a Republican Party presidential primary contender for president of the United States in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. In February 2023, she announced her candidature.

Born in Bamberg, South Carolina, U.S

Haley Randhawa was born at Bamberg County Hospital in Bamberg, South Carolina to immigrant Indian Punjabi Sikh parents. Her parents, Ajit Singh Randhawa and Raj Kaur Randhawa, immigrated to the United States from the Amritsar District of Punjab, India. Her father was a professor at Punjab Agricultural University, while her mother graduated from the University of Delhi with a law degree. From her childhood, Haley was known by her middle name, Nikki, a Punjabi name.

Haley’s parents relocated to Canada after her father was offered a scholarship at the University of British Columbia. After receiving his PhD in 1969, her father relocated his family to South Carolina to teach at Voorhees College, a historically black university. 

Raj Randhawa, her mother, received a master’s degree in education and taught in Bamberg public schools for seven years. Exotica International, a prominent apparel shop, was founded by her in 1976. It was decommissioned in 2008.

Haley has two brothers and a sister. Simran, her Canadian-born sister, went on to graduate from the Fashion Institute of Technology and work as a radio broadcaster. Her second brother, Charan, is a web designer; her first brother, Mitti, retired from the United States Army Chemical Corps after serving in Desert Storm.

Nikki Haley was appointed to the Orangeburg County Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors in 1998. In 2003, she was appointed to the Lexington Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors. In 2003, Haley was elected treasurer, and in 2004, she was elected president of the National Association of Women Business Owners.

The Lexington Gala, which raised money for a nearby hospital, was headed by Haley.
She also served on the boards of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Foundation, West Metro Republican Women, and the Lexington Medical Foundation. Elected as a State House of Represenatative

Nikki was elected to the state House of Representatives in 2004 after running on the standard Republican platform of tax reduction, immigration restrictions, and abortion bans.

Represented Lexington County’s District 87. In the Republican primary, she ran against Larry Koon, an incumbent state representative. He has served in the South Carolina Statehouse’s legislature the longest.

She was re-elected in 2008 and took office the following year.

Sarah Palin and other members of the Tea Party movement supported Haley’s 2010 campaign for governor of South Carolina. Haley faced racist epithets and charges of adultery during the contentious campaign, but she outperformed more seasoned competitors in the primary and went on to win the general election.

When she took office in 2011, she made history as the first woman and the first person of an ethnic minority to hold the governorship. During her first term South Carolina’s economy grew steadily as the jobless rate fell.

Won reelection again

Haley declared her intention to run for governor a second time on August 12, 2013. Tom Ervin ran against her in the Republican primaries. However, Ervin withdrew and later re-entered the 2014 gubernatorial campaign as an independent.

As she was chosen to deliver the Republican answer to U.S. President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address, her standing among Republicans grew. Haley supported U.S. Senator Ted Cruz in that year’s presidential race and criticised eventual Republican nominee Trump, particularly his desire for a Muslim ban.

However, she was chosen by President-elect Trump to represent the United States at the UN in November 2016. She was easily confirmed by the Senate in January 2017 by a vote of 96 to 4 despite having little prior experience in foreign policy. She finally announced her resignation as South Carolina’s governor.

Haley gained a reputation for speaking her mind while serving as UN ambassador, particularly when it came to Iran and North Korea, both of whom were working on nuclear programmes. She backed Trump’s decision to renege on the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran in 2018, despite the other signatories (China, France, Russia, Germany, and the United Kingdom) indicating their commitment to the pact.

Haley added that if conflict broke out, North Korea’s government would be “utterly annihilated” and that the United States would “never tolerate” a nuclear North Korea. Haley occasionally disagreed with the president and other members of his staff despite having previously assured Trump that she would speak her views.
