Elizabeth Mcqueen was a dynamic businesswoman who thrived in 1930s Southern California on a specialised brand of techno-optimist internationalism. Her religious upbringing as a Christian Scientist influenced her understanding and experience of thinking as a practise with the potential to alter the world. McQueen’s spiritual experience with aircraft inspired her to apply a spiritual paradigm to a political aim – the development of world peace and Anglo-American liberal hegemony.
She intentionally drew on gendered conceptions of sociability and spirituality to construct her aviation gospel at a time when women were crucial to the emergence of a new technology. Once commercial aviation was firmly established in the United States, women were consigned to service roles, in a development that mimics the establishment of IR as a discipline.

Elizabeth Lippincott McQueen was born in Salem County, New Jersey on New Year’s Eve 1878. Elizabeth’s parents were Reverend Dr. Benjamin Crispin Lippincott, the first superintendent of public instruction in Washington Territory, and Deborah Hand Diverty, a New Jersey Methodist Episcopal Church minister. His second wife’s name was Deborah. Dr. Jesse R. Diverty Lippincott, a physician, and Reverend Benjamin Crispin Lippincott Jr. were Elizabeth’s two brothers.
In 1900, Elizabeth married Ulysses Grant McQueen (1864-1937). In New York City, he was a rich inventor and manufacturer. They resided in New York until 1928, when they relocated to Beverly Hills, California.

She founded the California Women’s Aeronautic Association. Similar groups sprang up in New York, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Canada, England, France, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand.
These numerous organisations amalgamated to become the Women’s International Association of Aeronautics (WIAA), which remained the primary focus of her work for the remainder of her life.

Mrs. McQueen married Dr. Irving Reed Bancroft, a distinguished retired Los Angeles physician, about 1955, after Ulysses Grant McQueen died in 1937.
Died
She died on December 24, 1958, at the age of 80, at her house in Hermosa Beach, California, following a lengthy period of poor health. Her ashes were scattered at the Portal of Folded Wings Shrine to Aviation.
Her archive is housed in the Rare Books & Manuscripts department of the University of Southern California’s Doheny Memorial Library.
