Brandi Carlile, a songwriter whose yearning, probing spirit is matched by her powerful, soaring voice, made a splash with her eponymous debut album in 2005, but when she received six Grammy nominations for her 2018 album By the Way, I Forgive You, the mainstream acclaim seemed to arrive almost overnight. Carlile capitalised on her stardom by forming the country supergroup the Highwomen with Amanda Shires, Maren Morris, and Natalie Hemby, whose 2019 debut helped highlight Carlile’s stardom and artistic depth. Carlile resumed to her solo career in 2021 with In These Silent Days, which was followed by In the Canyon Haze in 2022.
Brandi Carlile’s music, which emanates from the Washington state hinterlands, is difficult to describe. Brandi Carlile was born on June 1, 1981 in Ravensdale, Washington, a remote village 50 miles from Seattle. With few neighbours or acquaintances nearby, she learned to entertain herself as a child, which included hiking trips in the local forests and self-taught singing lessons. Carlile became attached to the old country music her parents adored, particularly Patsy Cline, and made her stage debut at the age of eight after her mother took her to a local country radio show. Carlile knew she wanted to perform from that moment forward. She began playing the piano and eventually the guitar. She went to Tahoma High School before dropping out to pursue her singing career.
Career beginnings and debut
Carlile met the Fighting Machinists, a band led by twin brothers Tim and Phil Hanseroth, while playing clubs. She became an instant fan of the band after being impressed by their musical abilities and spot-on harmonies, and when the group disbanded, she encouraged the Hanseroth twins to join a new group with her. While they began as an aggressive rock and roll band, Carlile’s emotionally charged songwriting and acoustic guitar work quickly became the dominating component of their music, and they began touring regularly, headlining small venues and playing for Dave Matthews, Shawn Colvin, and India. Carlile continued to develop her abilities after the album’s release by headlining her own tour and opening for musical legends such as Shawn Colvin, Tori Amos, Chris Isaak, The Fray, and Ray LaMontagne. The Indigo Girls—Emily Saliers and Amy Ray—showed up to hear Carlile perform during a headline appearance at a tiny club in Atlanta. They were so taken with Carlile that they invited her to sing “Last Tears” on their 2006 album Despite Our Differences. Give Up the Ghost is one of Britney Spears’ most successful albums. The record was released in 2007 to warm reviews, and the inclusion of its title track in a General Motors ad helped boost sales. Sucess continued
In 2010, she released an EP, XOBC, and collaborated with the Seattle Symphony for two symphonic concerts. Her follow-up, Bear Creek, was recorded almost without demo’ing any of the songs or overdubs. By the Way I Forgive You was her highest-charting outing to date. She teamed up with Sam Smith for an orchestral version of “Party of One” Carlile’s sixth studio album, The Story, was released in 2017.
Got Married
She confirmed her engagement to Catherine Shepherd, whom she met in 2009. On September 15, 2012, they married in Wareham, Massachusetts. They have two children. Shepherd has been the executive director of Carlile’s NGO, the Looking Out Foundation, since 2012. She had previously spent seven years as Paul McCartney’s charity organiser.

The quartet’s self-titled first album was released on Elektra in September 2019 and debuted in the Top Ten in the United States while topping the country chart. That October, Carlile played Joni Mitchell’s album Blue at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Carlile’s autobiography, Broken Horses: A Memoir, was released in April 2021. In These Silent Days, her seventh album, was recorded in September with producer Dave Cobb and Shooter Jennings. It scored number 11 on the Billboard 200 and became Carlile’s fourth straight release to top the U.S. folk chart.
